Education
I’m a full-time IB Mathematics tutor, specializing in IB DP Mathematics (AA/AI, SL & HL). With 14+ years of teaching experience (since 2011), I’ve helped hundreds of students strengthen their understanding, build confidence, and achieve higher results through a clear, structured, systematic, and exam-focused approach. Whether you need support with specific topics, homework guidance, or exam preparation, I’m here to help you reach your academic goals. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- My tutoring style My lessons are highly personalized and designed to build both deep understanding and strong exam performance. I focus on: • Diagnosing misconceptions quickly and fixing them at the root • Building a clear and accurate “concept image” before moving into problem-solving • Creating a solid foundation with well-organized notes, summaries, and topic frameworks • Tracking recurring errors and building a clear improvement plan to strengthen accuracy and consistency • Using IB past paper questions to understand each topic’s difficulty level and the exam’s typical question styles, so students know exactly what to expect and how to respond efficiently • Training students to become faster, more confident, and more strategic in exams (especially for IB AA HL) Students often tell me that my teaching makes difficult topics feel “finally clear,” and that they learn not only how to solve questions, but why the method works, so they can handle unfamiliar exam questions with confidence. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Education • BSc, Guangxi University (China) • MSc, East China University of Science and Technology (China) Free trial lesson If you’d like to try a free trial lesson, feel free to contact me: ibmathtutor.sara@gmail.com

She’s not only extremely knowledgeable but also an excellent teacher. Her explanations are very clear and if you don’t understand something she will find another way to explain the topic to you until you do. She helps you see concepts in a new way by proposing intuitive solutions to challenging questions that allow you to become much more confident in your maths skills overall. Her classes definitely helped me improve my mathematical thinking! Overall, she is also a very supportive and kind person who helped me tremendously! Highly recommended!!” Anjalika (IB AA HL, May 2025, Got a 7 for IB final exam) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 10 Mathematics / Grade 11–12 IB Higher Level Mathematics I had never particularly excelled at maths until I began having tutoring sessions with Sara. Under her tutelage, I learnt better maths and exam technique, and progressed so well that I earned the Maths Award at school for two years consecutively. Sara prepared me so well that even though I underperformed on my IB exams due to nerves, I still ended up with a safe 7 in IB HL Maths. I honestly do not think that I would have gotten my 7 without her, and would recommend her to any student struggling with any level of maths. Sara will not only help you excel at maths, but she will also help you learn to love the subject too! — Kyra (accepted to the University of Cambridge to study Law, 2017) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 10 Advanced Mathematics, Grade 11-12 IB Higher Level Math Sara is an excellent math tutor. She is patient, encouraging and she knows the math curriculum for IB and IGCSE and has a lot of relevant materials and books to share. My daughter’s confidence and grades in Math have greatly improved since she started with Sara. My daughter will send problems she cannot solve to Sara in Advance and they will work out the problems together during the lesson. Sara will usually have similar exercises ready for her to work on for practice. My daughter enjoys her lessons and is never bored. Sara is also very happy to answer my questions and address my concerns regarding my daughter’s progress promptly. She shows a keen interest in my child’s progress. -----Mrs. Chong ( 2014) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 11, IGCSE math “Sara is the best tutor we ever had, her good explanation skills and her friendly -way to teach, gave Nathalie a good feeling and o lot of fun in study. Nathalie’s grades improve within a short time and they are still on a good level around 90%. Sara prepares a lot of tasks for my daughter and finds the right way to teach her without any stress, my daughter even like to have this additional lessons. She found immediately confidence in Sara and she becomes more self-confident afterwards.” --------Christian (father of Nathalie , 2013) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 11-12 IB Standard Level Math & University level Calculus “Sara Qin is the most outstanding math tutor I have ever known and she has consistently helped my daughter through comprehensive lessons for the past four years – through the IB Diploma and college-level mathematics at New York University. She has in-depth knowledge about areas such as but not limited to: Algebra, Calculus, Circular Functions and Trigonometry, Functions, and Equations, Geometry, Statistics and Probability, and Vectors. Her firm grasp on high-level concepts and ability to explain them in logical terms rooting back to the fundamental rules of math is why she is a true math genius – other teachers can explain something they have taught over and over again just by repeating sentences from textbooks, but Sara Qin is able to self-learn and figure out difficult and abnormal math questions on the spot and has demonstrated a high level of intelligence and passion for mathematics. Additionally, Sara’s character is admirable – she genuinely cares for the wellbeing of her students and is willing to stay up late occasionally and rearrange her own commitments to ensure her students receive the help and guidance they need. She loves teaching students who are diligent and willing to learn, and that care and passion are what motivates her students to succeed in school and in life. I strongly recommend Sara Qin without any reservations whatsoever. She is truly the best math educator I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. ” ------Linda (mother of Jeni, who was accepted to New York University in 2016) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 12, IB MATH HL Sara and Denny tutored me from January 2018 to May 2018 in preparation for my Math HL exam. They are truly the best tutors I have ever had, and I’m very thankful for their help and support during those few months. Sara helped me raise my grade from a low 5 to a high 6. She goes very in depth and explains everything thoroughly, making sure I understood every step of the way. Sara has not only helped me in math but also made me a more confident and organized student. Our lessons were always well planned and personalized, catering to my abilities. She also took the time to go over my homework questions and make additional revision worksheets for me. Through the use of an online whiteboard, Sara effectively achieved a classroom atmosphere, which helped me fully focus and easily ask questions as she wrote. Denny helped me with the option calculus and was just as effective and methodological as Sara. He effectively covered the whole syllabus in just a few lessons and helped me go from a 3 to a 6 in paper 3. I’m very grateful to have had these two as my tutors and don’t think I would’ve achieved such a high score without them. Sincerely, Ameena L (2018) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 10-12 Mathematics Like many things in today’s technological world, we found Sara through the internet. Although Sara resides in Kingston, and we reside in Calgary, Sara has been tutoring our daughter, Lauren, for the past 4 months via Skype. At first, we were doubtful that such a set up would be effective in achieving our goals. To our pleasant surprise, tutoring via Skype works amazingly well, and in light of busy schedules, is very convenient. With minimal investment in an interactive drawing tablet, Sara and Lauren are able to see each other’s work, and their sessions together have been extremely productive. Since working with Sara, Lauren’s confidence in her math abilities has increased manifold. Her mark has steadily increased over the semester. Lauren also has a better fundamental understanding of mathematical principles. A solid understanding of basic principles coupled with confidence in her abilities, are key to continued future success. Sara has helped Lauren to achieve both of these two vital components. ---Wanda -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 11, IB Higher Level Math “Sara is an excellent Teacher in Mathematics at IB level. She demonstrates great conceptual clarity, is hardworking, has patience, and is a committed Teacher. Her passion for Mathematics and teaching coupled with the dedication to improve confidence of students makes her an effective Teacher. Sara’s warm and friendly approach makes her distinctly different from others.” ---------Sreelatha -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grade 11-12 Math “We found Sara to be professional, but also extremely warm and engaging. She is able to connect with her students in a way that builds confidence and encourages their development. Our daughter’s grades jumped almost 15% after she started working with Sara, who is able to look at problems through the student’s eyes and answer their questions in a way that brings the learning full circle. Many times our daughter took Sara’s explanation to a math equation back to her classroom teacher and the whole class was then able to benefit from Sara’s clear and concise reasoning and approach to complex math problems. Sara’s understanding is so thorough that she can look at and take apart a math problem from many angles so that her students have an opportunity to truly “get it”. Our daughter had many, many moments with Sara where the “lightbulb” went on and her grasp of the math continually deepened under her tutelage. By the time our daughter graduated from grade 12, she had a love of math that had not been there previously, and had achieved 100% on multiple tests. This success was in very large part due to the relationship she had with Sara and the excellent teaching that she received while she was her pupil. With Sara’s help, our daughter always felt fully prepared for test and exams, and she developed a new and motivating confidence in her abilities as a math student. I would not hesitate to recommend Sara to anyone interested in a tutor who is reliable, fun, professional and who has the ability to bring clarity and understanding to the subjects she teaches.” ------- Kristen (Mother of Piper, 2016 ) --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hobbies
When I’m not teaching, I’m usually doing one of three things: collecting math books, being outdoors, or quietly hanging out with birds. I’m a bit of a math textbook collector. I currently have over 200 books from different countries and curricula, covering everything from middle school math to IB HL and beyond. Some people collect novels; I collect math explanations. What I love most is seeing how the same topic can be taught in completely different ways depending on the system. A chapter on functions or trigonometry might look “obvious” in one textbook and totally different in another, and that variety helps me a lot as a tutor. If one explanation doesn’t click for a student, I usually have three more ways to teach it, and one of them almost always works. I also enjoy skiing and hiking. Skiing is my favorite way to reset. it’s one of those activities where you’re fully in the moment, focused, and your brain gets a break from overthinking. Hiking is the opposite pace: slow, quiet, and grounding. I like long walks, fresh air, and coming back feeling mentally “cleared.” And yes, I genuinely enjoy feeding birds. It’s surprisingly calming, and it teaches patience in a very simple way. You don’t rush the process. You show up consistently, observe, and let trust build over time. Honestly, that’s not so different from learning math: confidence comes from small wins, repeated often, until the big problems don’t feel so scary anymore. These little hobbies say a lot about my teaching style too: I’m curious, practical, and I really care about helping students feel calmer and more capable, not just “get the answer,” but actually understand what they’re doing and feel good about it.
